A progressive neurodegenerative condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in muscular atrophy, weakness, and eventually paralysis. Although the precise etiology of ALS is not entirely understood, it is thought to be a result of a mix of hereditary and environmental factors. Some cases of ALS are hereditary, while others are brought on by gene mutations.
